Our cat had four kittens back in May and we have had a ball watching the process of these little kittens becoming cats! I didn't have any animals growing up and have to admit to not being a cat lover (that's putting it mildly!) But this has been so much fun; watching the kittens play together and grow!
We gave two kittens away and kept one for our family and one for our granddaughter. Our son's friend took one of the kittens and I was amazed to see that when he brought it over two weeks later, the kitten ran straight to it's mom and started nursing!
I have come to see the great benefit to kids of having pets; and all the better if they can anticipate their birth, watch the birth, and get to see them grow from the start. It's been an education and it's provided us with lots of laughs.
It seems to me that this process is very healing for kids who are grieving. They have an animal to hold, love, and take care of, along with giving them a sense of comfort at a particularly difficult time in their lives. I'm so happy that our cat stayed out all night one night and surprised us with becoming pregnant. She was fairly young and we had been thinking of having her neutered. My husband thinks we should do that now before we head into round two, but the kids and I are dragging our feet and hoping that we get to witness this process at least one more time!
